A skilled player from the Glenora Bears, Jellick gained recognition while playing for the Waitakere City Raiders in the Lion Red competitions between 1995 and 1996. He eventually joined the English second division team, Widnes, for the 1997 season.
After contributing to Glenora's victory in the Fox Memorial grand final in 1998 and representing New Zealand Māori on a tour of the Cook Islands, he landed a contract with North Queensland.
