But young and aspiring athletes from smaller communities have always faced a tough decision. Do they move far away to pursue their dreams or remain in the comfort and security of home?
Former national rugby league player Ash Taylor played his junior football in Toowoomba, but when it came to higher honours, a move away from home was unavoidable.
“Straight out of school, I pretty much had to head down to Brisbane to further my development, to be able to give me a chance to play in the NRL,” he said.
