  • No Papa, no worries: 'The Ice Man' has Raiders walking tall as changes made for Warriors clash

The Raiders lose Josh Papali'i but rely on young talent Ethan "The Ice Man" Sanders, whose game-winning field goal boosts confidence and tops the Dally M leaderboard.

    The Canberra Times

The Canberra Raiders will be without experienced leader Josh Papali'i as part of two changes for Friday night's clash against the Warriors, but "The Ice Man" has the squad walking tall regardless.

Ethan Sanders is best known as "Sando" at Raiders HQ, but his teammates might be adopting a new nickname after his game-winning heroics against Manly.

The 22-year-old's clutch golden point field goal in just his fifth NRL game, put all doubt to bed over the young halfback's ability to deliver in the NRL - and now he tops the Dally M Medal leaderboard.

"He's had a few nicknames, they all stick, so we might start calling him 'The Ice Man' soon," Raiders forward and Sanders' former NSW Blues Under-19 teammate, Myles Martin, said.

The Raiders were defeated 24-16 after a second-half dominance from the North Sydney Bears in the SG Ball Cup.

Canberra made their mark early, scoring a try in the opening five minutes through halfback Jamie Cowling.

Even though they had the advantage, the Raiders couldn't capitalise and Raiders forward Zildjian Tafili was sent to the sin bin in the closing minutes.
