ACT rugby clubs are rallying around referees after an alleged violent confrontation left a match official unconscious at a junior sevens tournament, leaving some to concede "it's hard to believe something like this could happen at a kids' rugby game".
Two men have been charged with assault after an alleged violent confrontation at a junior sevens tournament at Southwell Park on Sunday. ACT police allege an 18-year-old assaulted one referee, and as that match official was being assisted by a second referee, police allege a 42-year-old man - the father of the 18-year-old - punched the second referee from behind and left the official unconscious.
