Xavier Savage has a premiership trophy with the ladder-leaders at the forefront of his mind.

But lingering in the back is a piece of land in the Torres Strait Islands.

Born and raised in Cairns, Savage grew up in a big family that already had strong ties to their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

A life-changing journey to the Torres Strait as a 15-year-old only deepened that connection.

Savage met local elders, who revealed his ancestral bond to the Islands went back six generations and that his family owned a parcel of land that had sat untouched for decades.
