The Canberra Raiders slipped to 1-4 after a 32-12 loss to the Newcastle Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Early in the game the Raiders were pinned on their own line as lapses in discipline handed Newcastle extended attacking possession.

Canberra's defence stood firm for the opening 10 minutes before Ethan Strange's clever footwork created space for Simi Sasagi to score the first try.

The match became a tight back-and-forth affair and Noah Martin looked to have opened it up with a strong break down the right edge, only for Knights cover to force an error in contact.

Newcastle defeated Canberra 32-12, marking the Raiders' fourth consecutive loss, while the Knights improved to 4-1, celebrating their best start since 2015.

    The Canberra Times

The Canberra Raiders' season has slumped even further with the 2025 minor premiers losing their fourth match in a row, thumped 32-12 by high flying Newcastle.

Ricky Stuart's side lost just five regular season games en route to the minor premiership in 2025 and didn't suffer their fourth loss until round 20.

Now they have begun 2026 1-4 and are languishing in the bottom three.

One in, one in doubt: Rabbitohs forward pack to change for Perth

Brandon Smith returns for Rabbitohs; Koloamatangi has a manageable knee issue but may still play against the Raiders.

    Zero Tackle

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will have at least one change to their forward pack for next Saturday's clash with the Canberra Raiders, with Brandon Smith to return from a pre-season calf injury.

Koloamatangi looked sore during the opening exchanges of the clash with Canterbury on Friday, but managed to play through the pain barrier.

News Corp are now reporting he has a knee issue which will need to be managed throughout the season, although it's not likely to leave the Dragons-bound star out for any extended period of time.

That means he is still a chance of playing against the Raiders on Saturday, although no guarantee at this stage.
