A Capitals star is poised to become one of Canberra's highest-paid athletes after signing a one-year deal worth more than $700,000 as women's basketball revels in a new era.

Canberra Capitals sensation Jade Melbourne inked a deal reportedly worth $712,000 to return to the Seattle Storm in the WNBA, after spending the past two seasons with the Washington Mystics.

The deal puts her in the realms of Canberra Raiders captain Joe Tapine, State of Origin forward Hudson Young, and Wallabies gun Rob Valetini among the city's highest-paid athletes.

Australia's upper echelon of women's basketball stars are revelling in a new era after the WNBA locked in a new collective bargaining agreement, opening the door for multi-million dollar paydays after months of negotiations.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart urges Savelio Tamale to regain confidence after fumbles during a thrilling win over South Sydney, despite a key 50m sprint highlight.

    The Canberra Times

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart is urging Savelio Tamale to believe in his abilities after the talented winger suffered a case of the fumbles during Saturday's pulsating 36-34 win over the Rabbitohs in Perth.

The 21-year-old did at least enjoy one major highlight - swooping on a Rabbitohs fumble in the 28th minute to launch a 50m sprint to the line.

But even that almost ended in disaster, with Tamale inexplicably stopping abruptly one metre short of the line instead of diving over.
