Perth Bears eyeing off Raiders centre

The Perth Bears are interested in Raiders centre Matt Timoko amid uncertainty about his contract and reduced playing time.

The Perth Bears have shown interest in Canberra Raiders centre Matt Timoko, with the expansion side understood to be closely monitoring his contract situation as uncertainty builds around his future in the nation's capital.

Timoko, 26, has been a long-serving Raider since making his NRL debut in 2020, going on to play 112 games for the club.

However, his role has significantly reduced in 2026, with the centre managing just one NRL appearance this season as Simi Sasagi has been preferred in the centres.

That lack of game time has come as his contract situation also remains unresolved, with a mutual option in place for next season.

NRL Late Mail Round 7: Why Savelio Tamale dropped himself, Jake Trbojevic confirmed

Savelio Tamale requested to play NSW Cup to regain confidence, allowing Matt Timoko to start in the NRL.

    The Australian

Canberra Raiders winger Savelio Tamale asked coach Ricky Stuart if he could play NSW Cup against the Storm on Saturday.

Tamale, who has been an outright starter for the Raiders since making his debut with the club last year, approached his coach in the wake of the team's win against the Rabbitohs in Perth last week.

The 21-year-old felt he had lost some confidence after his start to the season, and wanted to work on his craft for the week down in the reserve grade competition before returning to the NRL.

Tamale's exit has opened the door for Matt Timoko to get his first start of the year in the NRL, after being held out by Simi Sasagi for the opening month of the competition.

Both players sustained injuries in their side's loss to the Canberra Raiders last weekend in Perth.

Fifita came off with a hamstring injury during the match, with the club expecting him to miss six weeks of action.

Scans revealed Gray sustained a Grade 3 AC joint sprain, and despite the injury allowing for unpredictable recovery periods, he is set to miss four weeks.
