Simi Sasagi stars as Canberra Raiders win 26-22 over Melbourne Storm

The Storm, once dominant, now struggle with five consecutive losses and fading competitiveness due to injuries and departures.

    The Australian

Plenty of smart judges have written the Storm off in the past and have been left with egg on their faces, but it's time to start making the omelette because the best team of the past two decades appears to be cooked.

The Storm have now lost five on the trot after they gave up a halftime lead to go down 26-22 to Canberra at GIO Stadium, with Craig Bellamy's side already losing touch with the top eight.

The team that lost the past two grand finals started the year on fire with two huge wins, but a stack of injuries and key departures have finally caught up with the men in purple who have seemingly lost their aura.

Opposition teams no longer fear them and they can't rely on special plays from their superstar spine who don't have the forwards to give them room, nor the strike players out wide who can conjure something out of nothing.

This was a much better showing than what we saw from them last week when they were humiliated at home by the Warriors, with a lot more effort and some slick play from fullback Sua Fa'alogo who was clobbered high and forced off late.

Ricky Stuarts new stance on ‘six again’

Concerns rise over NRL's six-again rule, with fears it disrupts competitiveness and increases defensive fatigue amid rising scores.

    Zero Tackle

Rising concerns are emerging around the NRL's six-again rule, with Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart now warning the game may have "lost the fabric" of what makes it competitive, amid growing debate over whether increased speed is driving blowout scorelines and defensive fatigue.

Introduced to reduce stoppages and encourage attacking football, the rule is now under renewed scrutiny, with questions being raised about whether it is genuinely improving the spectacle or simply overloading defensive systems.

According to NRL data, there have been more tries scored from a tackle set starting with a six-again this season, rising to 22 per cent compared to 18 per cent last year.

The numbers also point to a significant spike in game restarts early in the 2026 season. There was a 35 per cent increase in set restarts in Round 1. The average set restarts in 2025 were (5.87), and in Round 1, 2025 was (4.63). That jumped to an average of 8.14 in Round 1 of the 2026 season.

  • Wish list: The names who can turn a Canberra Stadium dream into a reality

    Caden Helmers

An independent board for Canberra's new stadium has sparked debate on suitable candidates to manage its development and present plans to government within a year.

    The Canberra Times

Stadium ideas are a dime a dozen, and it's easy to throw around blueprints when you're spending the millions someone else has stashed under the mattress.

The idea to launch an independent board overseeing the development of a new stadium in Canberra has sparked plenty of conversation - good and bad - this week.
