NRL introduces Sunday preliminary finals; Broncos face Bulldogs/Panthers, Storm host Raiders/Sharks.

    LeagueNews.co

The NRL has revamped its preliminary finals weekend, introducing a Sunday match for the first time in 18 years. On Monday, the league announced that the Brisbane Broncos would face either the Canterbury Bulldogs or Penrith Panthers at Lang Park, set to kick off at 4:05pm AEST on September 28.

This marks the first preliminary final held on a Sunday afternoon since 2007. Additionally, the NRL has opted not to schedule the preliminary finals on consecutive days. Instead, the Melbourne Storm will host either the Canberra Raiders or Cronulla Sharks on Friday, September 26.

This adjustment allows the Storm's home preliminary final to be held without overlapping with the AFL grand final, which takes place the following day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Consequently, if the Raiders advance to the preliminary final, they will experience two six-day turnarounds.

NRL Announces 48-Hour Gap Between Finals

The NRL adjusted its preliminary final schedule, introducing a 48-hour gap between qualifiers.

    LeagueNews.co

The NRL has made a surprising change to the schedule for the preliminary finals, introducing a 48-hour gap between the two grand final qualifiers.

Traditionally, the semi-finals and preliminary finals take place on Friday and Saturday evenings during Weeks 2 and 3 of the finals. However, this year the NRL confirmed, prior to the first week of the finals, that the minor premier, the Canberra Raiders, requested a Sunday qualifying final. As a result, matches in Week 2 will now occur on Saturday and Sunday.

Furthermore, with the Melbourne Storm hosting one of the matches during the AFL grand final weekend, the NRL is keen to hold their preliminary final on Friday evening. This adjustment means the Raiders will face the Cronulla Sharks on a six-day turnaround during Week 2, allowing the winner of that match to compete against the Storm on Friday, September 26.

Brisbane considers captain Carrigan's season while Walsh receives fines but avoids a ban for headbutt.

    The Canberra Times

Brisbane are weighing up whether to roll the dice on captain Pat Carrigan's season, after a day where Reece Walsh avoided any ban for his controversial finals headbutt.

With all eyes on the charge sheet on Monday morning, Walsh was handed $4800 in fines following his wild and ultimately triumphant afternoon in Canberra.

Fresh off one of the greatest individual comebacks in finals history, Walsh copped a $3000 fine for a grade-one striking charge for his headbutt of Hudson Young.
