  • Ricky Stuart's Warning to Newcastle Over Contract

Ricky Stuart's message to Newcastle after 'disrespectful' contract offer to Origin player

Ricky Stuart criticized the Knights for disrespecting Dane Gagai's contract situation amid struggles.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has criticized the Newcastle Knights for their "disrespectful" handling of Dane Gagai's contract situation.

Despite the Knights suffering a heavy 44-18 loss to the Raiders, Gagai stood out as one of the team's best players.

Reports indicate that Gagai, currently under a $400,000 annual contract, feels disrespected by Newcastle's offer, which includes a potential extension until 2026 but would require a pay cut.

As the Knights deal with injuries and struggle in the season, Gagai has been a bright spot, stepping up in the absence of star player Kalyn Ponga.

Ricky Stuart believes Newcastle should re-sign Dane Gagai after his impressive performance against Canberra.

    The Canberra Times

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart says Newcastle shouldn't think twice about re-signing Dane Gagai after the speedster shone in the Knights' heavy loss to the Raiders.

The 34-year-old was shifted to fullback to replace star Kayln Ponga, and terrorised the Raiders' right edge, inspiring tries and leading their swift ball movement at a wet GIO Stadium on Sunday.

It meant the first half was a see-sawing contest, with the scores locked at 18-all at the break, before the ladder-leading Canberra pulled away to win 44-18.

Matthew Timoko led Canberra to a 44-18 win, securing a strong position for finals.

    The Canberra Times

Matthew Timoko has provided the game-defining presence to lead Canberra to a 44-18 win against Newcastle, building a four point buffer over the second-placed Melbourne Storm.

With six rounds left before the finals, the Raiders don't have to play any current top four opponents and have a bye in hand.

If the Green Machine are able to win the minor premiership, it would be their first since 1990, when coach Ricky Stuart was halfback.
