Perth Bears coach Mal Meinga opens up on club’s biggest challenges, roster questions

Mal Meninga, now in Perth for NRL, misses his family in Canberra but uses FaceTime until they can join him.

The Australian

Every night for the past two weeks, Mal Meninga has picked up his phone and tried to forget that he's 3600km away from his family.

The Canberra legend is officially a proud Perthite after moving to west to Subiaco to begin preparations for the inaugural season for his new NRL Bears.

Meninga's family will remain in the nation's capital - for now - with the rugby league Immortal hoping they might soon join him full-time in Western Australia.

Until then, he'll have to make do with daily FaceTime with his wife, Amanda, and three kids, two boys and a girl, all aged under 15.

Meninga will pop down for a swim at idyllic City Beach - where the sun sets over the Indian Ocean - after enjoying a coffee at a cafe next to his two-bedroom apartment.
