Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield’s Dally M award picks by position: Canberra Raiders dominate, Jahrome Hughes beats Nathan Cleary

The Canberra Raiders often receive minimal recognition at the NRL Dally M Awards, historically overlooked.

    The Daily Telegraph

The Canberra Raiders are used to being snubbed on the NRL's Dally M Awards night.

It's what Ricky Stuart always talks about … the lack of recognition for our minor premiers.

Almost out of sight and out of mind in the national capital.

And the proof lies in the history of the game's most prestigious award, the Dally M Medal.

In the club's previous grand final year in 2019, the Green Machine picked up only one positional award - second-rower John Bateman.

The likes of Josh Papalii, Joe Tapine and Jack Wighton couldn't get a look in.

Rewind further to Canberra's last premiership win in 1994.

Same old story. Fullback Brett Mullins was their one and only winner on the night.

Veteran Josh Papalii learns from teammates as Raiders secure first minor premiership in 35 years.

    The Canberra Times

Veteran prop Josh Papalii has been taking a leaf out of his younger teammates' playbook ahead of Canberra's finals campaign.

The Raiders scored a historic win against Wests Tigers in front of a sold-out crowd on Saturday, sealing their first minor premiership in 35 years.

A rocky performance from Ricky Stuart's men brought a 24-10 win over the Tigers, who had nothing to lose after watching their top-eight hopes evaporate.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart to rest key players for next week's match against Dolphins.

    Zero Tackle

Canberra Raiders head coach Ricky Stuart has revealed he will rest players for next weekend's clash with the Dolphins.

In a move that could have finals ramifications for the bottom of the top eight, the minor premiers will give the players that need it a week off.

Instead, a number of players who are, in his words "banged up and need a rest" will have a breather before preparing for their opening week qualifying final, to be held at GIO Stadium in Canberra against a yet to be confirmed opponent.

News Corp were reporting the Raiders will hand at least six players a rest including Kaeo Weekes.
