  • Knights and Raiders get their wish as Channel 9 request denied

NRL: Canberra Raiders to play Newcastle Knights in round one, 2024

    Yahoo! Sport

Channel 9 reportedly kicked up a stink about the teams slated to play on the first Thursday night of the 2024 season.

The Knights and Raiders will play the first Thursday night game of the 2024 season despite Channel 9 reportedly asking the NRL for a last-minute draw change. It was first reported by News Corp last week that Nine had voiced concerns with the NRL about the prospect of Newcastle and Canberra playing the Thursday night game, with the free-to-air broadcast partner seeking a switch to a more TV-friendly fixture.

Nine reportedly requested the match be changed to Canterbury v Parramatta. The Round 1 Thursday night clash will be the first game of the season on home soil, with the opening two fixtures to be played in Las Vegas.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have won the race to have the most games on free to air TV in 2024, with the club scheduled to have 14 of their 24 games shown by Channel 9.

The Redfern-based outfit start their season on Pay TV in America, but have their first three games back in Australia on free to air TV.

Ricky Stuart will count his blessings in having to play only the Warriors out of last year's top four twice and just one five-day recovery throughout the season. Double doses of the Tigers and Bulldogs will help, too, while they'll have to wait until round 21 before Jack Wighton returns to Canberra.
