Success of opening round justifies NRLW expansion, says Annesley

When the NRL moved to introduce four new teams to the NRLW for 2023, many commentators voiced fears the quality of football would drop as the competition scrambled to source new talent to fill its rosters.
But while 53 players made their NRLW debut in round one on the weekend, the matches were competitive, with two of the four expansion teams - the Sharks and Wests Tigers - winning their opening games.
The NRL's head of elite football, Graham Annesley, said the high quality of football in the opening round was proof the decision to expand the league was the correct one.

Strange call has rookie chasing a Raiders NRL dream

A Canberra Raiders prodigy is edging closer to an NRL debut as Ricky Stuart drafts Ethan Strange into his extended squad for a taste of the top flight.
The 18-year-old made waves when he claimed man of the match honours in the under-19s State of Origin clash a fortnight ago with a hat-trick and two try assists.
The Raiders snatched Strange from the Sydney Roosters on a three-year deal running until the end of 2025, and he has emerged as a player to watch.
