When Jack Wighton quit the Raiders to join South Sydney in search of a premiership at the end of 2023 most people thought Canberra were moving into a rebuild and were years away from challenging for a title.

Unsung and unfashionable the Canberra Raiders are undoubtedly the best story of the season sitting on top off the competition with eight rounds of the regular season remaining.

The Bulldogs lost to the Broncos after a surprising backline switch by coach Ciraldo.

The Bulldogs were bested by the Broncos in Round 18 after Cameron Ciraldo made a big spine switch, while a Raiders gun delivered a fullback masterclass.

An hour before the Bulldogs' loss to the Broncos on Friday night, coach Cameron Ciraldo made a surprise switch to his backline, promoting Lachlan Galvin to the starting side.

Benji Marshall, meanwhile, highlighted his young guns with a "bright" future after losing two of the Tigers' best young talents.
