Canberra Raiders women defeated by Knights in physical NRLW trial, injuries to two players.

    The Canberra Times

The Canberra Raiders women will come back from Wagga Wagga a little battered and bruised after a physical NRLW trial defeat to the reigning premiers, Newcastle.

The Knights routed the Raiders 28-8 in Canberra's first ever pre-season clash before the Green Machine's second NRLW campaign officially kicks off in three weeks on July 28 against the Tigers at Campbelltown.

Coach Darrin Borthwick wasn't impressed with Canberra's attack in the Riverina, but of more concern was a left leg injury to Cheyelle Robins-Reti and concussion to Shakiah Tungai.

Canberra Raiders coach wants Women's State of Origin later in NRLW season for pre-season preparation.

    The Canberra Times

Canberra Raiders coach Darrin Borthwick has called on Women's State of Origin to shift later in the year and get played during the NRLW season.

Borthwick said losing key players during the pre-season came at the worst possible time as the Green Machine prepared for their second campaign.

Both the Raiders' Origin stars - Grace Kemp and Sophie Holyman - will play their pre-season trial against Newcastle at Wagga Wagga on Saturday, with England international Hollie Mae-Dodd making her return from a knee reconstruction.

    The Canberra Times

Canberra Raiders NRLW duo Queensland's Sophie Holyman and NSW forward Grace Kemp have the opportunity to do something no-one has ever done before.

On Thursday in Townsville the pair will run out in the first-ever Women's State of Origin decider, and for Holyman the chance to play is extra special after being dropped in game two by the Maroons.

"I'm super excited to be back on the field with the girls and have the opportunity to play in a match that's creating history," Holyman told The Canberra Times.
