For 15 straight games, the Brisbane Broncos had found a way to win. Then in Canberra, they didn't.
The reigning premiers were beaten 22-4 by a Raiders side that came into round six with just two wins. It was a stunning result, but perhaps more importantly, it was the first time this season Brisbane had been forced to confront something they hadn't experienced for a very long time: losing control of a game.
The question now isn't whether the Broncos are still a good football team. They are. The question is how they respond.
Last season, the Broncos lost just once in the regular season, against the Roosters, before going on to win the premiership. That defeat became part of the process - a loss they had to have. This one comes at a different point in their development.
They now face the Roosters and Titans in consecutive weeks before finishing their regular season against the Warriors, and they will do it (for this weekend at least) without Ali Brigginshaw and Jada Ferguson.
