Market watch: Rising star Calvin-Harris Tavita signs new Broncos deal, Raiders re-sign Ethan Sanders

Calvin Harris-Tavita, a 17-year-old halfback, joins Broncos' top squad, eyeing NRL debut after signing an upgraded contract.

The Australian

The Broncos are ready to unleash the next Benji Marshall with Calvin Harris-Tavita to join Brisbane's top squad as the teenage playmaking prodigy eyes an NRL debut next season.

The 17-year-old halfback sensation signed an upgraded Broncos contract on Wednesday, putting Harris-Tavita within touching distance of emulating Benji by debuting in the NRL as a teenager.

"Another step closer," an elated Harris-Tavita said on his social-media account as he celebrated his new deal with Broncos coach Michael Maguire and chief executive Dave Donaghy.

The classy Kiwi is already tied to the Broncos until the end of 2028, but the beefed-up contract will see Harris-Tavita added to Brisbane's pre-season to train alongside Ezra Mam, Reece Walsh and Jonah Pezet.

It is rare for 17-year-olds to be invited to train with a full-time NRL squad. Brisbane's move underlines the esteem in which they hold Harris-Tavita, who was crowned Australia's top schoolboys player last month when he won the Peter Sterling Medal after steering Wavell High to their first national title in 24 years.
