NSW Women's State of Origin coach John Strange sent a message to his son Ethan before Wednesday's Origin series opener telling him how much he looked up to the 21-year-old Blues debutant.

As he prepared to return to the Gold Coast after watching Ethan help the Blues complete a record comeback at Accor Stadium, John said his performance would inspire his own shot at history as NSW aim to become the first Women's team to win a series cleansweep.

"I messaged Ethan before he went out there to tell him I am not just proud of him, I actually look up to him as a person and for what he does," Strange said.

"I really mean that, he inspires me to be the best I can be so I can't wait for our game.

Origin Game One: Blues v Maroons

The 2026 Ampol State of Origin begins in Sydney, featuring debutants for both teams seeking victory.

The 2026 Ampol State of Origin series kicks off in Blues heartland in Sydney with Laurie Daley's men hell bent on getting off to a winning start in their bid to return the shield to New South Wales.

Reigning champions Queensland start their title defence with four debutants in their ranks in Jojo Fifita, Sam Walker, Max Plath and Briton Nikora, while the Blues are blooding Addin Fonua-Blake, Victor Radley, Ethan Strange, Casey McLean, Blayke Brailey and Tolu Koula in the Game One pressure cooker.

Even though the Blues managed to win the 2024 series after losing Game One at home, they won't want to put themselves in that position again, so a flying start in front of NSW faithful at Accor is imperative.

Raiders NRLW second rower Monalisa Soliola (Raider #11) has decided she will sit out the 2026 NRLW season.

Soliola, who played in the club's first three NRLW seasons, has decided to take some time away from the game.

The 21-year-old debuted for the Dragons in 2022 at 18 and has played 25 NRLW games over four seasons.

Raiders NRLW coach Darrin Borthwick said the club was fully supportive of Soliola's decision and wished her all the best for the remainder of the year.

"Mona has decided she wants to take a year off footy and I gave her my blessings to do that," Borthwick said.

"She'll always be one of our inaugural players, Raider #11. She's definitely part of our history here as part of the women's program.
