  • Can the Raiders convince Wighton to stay in Canberra? Big Mal weighs in

    Mal Meninga

    SEN

The Canberra Raiders are now seemingly fighting a losing battle to keep former Dally M Medallist Jack Wighton at the club beyond 2024.

SEN rugby league expert Mal Meninga opened up on how the club can convince him to stay in the nation’s capital and how a move to Sydney might affect Wighton’s lifestyle.

“Latrell (Mitchell) does (lives in Sydney), he’s got a young family, but he often makes treks back to his farm in Taree,” Meninga said on *SEN 1170 The Throwdown.

“That’s the cultural bit I’m talking about, someone like Latrell, he’s a really good example, he struggles to live in the big city, he loves his own space and time by himself or with his family further up north, and the club allows him to do that.

“I think that appeals to Jack, he loves his fishing, I tried to call him the other day, but he was fishing up on the Murrumbidgee, so that’s where he wants to be.

“The Raiders can offer all that, it’s a big country city but it’s got all the trims of a countrified environment, which appeals to Jack."

Jack Wighton may be the missing piece to the South Sydney premiership puzzle.

The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio on Thursday told SEN Breakfast the Rabbitohs have 14 players without contracts beyond the 2024 season, including some big name players.

Among that group of un-signed players is Queensland State of Origin star Jai Arrow, boom centre Campbell Graham and gun forwards Tevita Tatola and Keaon Koloamatangi.

Panthers great Greg Alexander said on the radio show a number of the star players yet to re-sign with the club would also be in a position to command a pay rise.

  • Why Souths don’t need a salary sombrero to sign Jack Wighton

Why Souths don’t need a salary sombrero to sign Jack Wighton

    The Sydney Morning Herald

At some point on Friday, on either side of the John Sattler memorial that will take place at the club’s old stomping ground at Redfern Oval, South Sydney powerbrokers are expected to make their pitch to Jack Wighton.

It will not be as financially attractive as the offers put to him by the Raiders and Dolphins, but will be compelling nonetheless; a chance to play with his great mate Latrell Mitchell, at a club that’s a genuine chance of winning a premiership.

The deal, should he accept it, will come at a cost of about $1 million. The Rabbitohs are prepared to table a contract of up to...
