  • Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga meets with Corey Horsburgh after Junior Paulo contract talks collapse

Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga meets with Corey Horsburgh after Junior Paulo contract talks collapse

Perth Bears are pursuing Corey Horsburgh after failing to secure Junior Paulo from Parramatta due to contract disagreements.

    The Australian

Perth Bears have shifted their attention to out-of-favour Canberra prop Corey Horsburgh after they were unable to reach a deal with Parramatta veteran Junior Paulo.

It is understood the Bears will now focus on a deal with Horsburgh after prolonged talks to secure Paulo on a two-year deal were unable to see the parties agreed to a deal.

The Bears had scoffed at the $900,000 asking price for Paulo and their counteroffer was not enough to secure a deal. Talks had been ongoing for weeks, but it now seems unlikely Paulo will join the Bears next season.

Instead, Paulo is likely to stay at Parramatta where he still has a one-year offer on the table - the Eels are yet to rule out a second season but won't commit to a deal for 2028 just yet.

The Eels would also want Paulo, who turns 33 in November, to remain at the club once he retires.

Corey Horsburgh's tumultuous time at Canberra Raiders may end following conflicts with coach Ricky Stuart. Consistency remains an issue.

    Wide World of Sports

Corey Horsburgh's time at Canberra appears to be up, after his rocky relationship with coach Ricky Stuart reached boiling point last weekend.

The enigmatic front-rower has endured a rollercoaster tenure with the Raiders since bursting onto the scene seven years ago, playing 22 matches in his rookie season and featuring in the side's grand final loss to the Sydney Roosters.

Horsburgh clearly possessed the talent and aggression to become one of the game's elite big men, but has failed to find consistency and struggled to tiptoe the delicate line between being a game-changing enforcer and letting his emotions become a detriment - either to himself or to his Raiders teammates.

Six years ago, Horsburgh was taken from the field with an injury and flipped the bird towards the crowd at Parramatta. It was the first glimpse into a player who wears his heart on his sleeve, but wasn't able to contain his emotions.

It took more than three years to get the result, but when it finally came, the Raiders didn't just beat defending premiers Brisbane, they sent a message to the rest of the NRLW with a commanding 28-4 victory.

For the first time, Canberra had toppled Brisbane, ending the Broncos' 15-game winning streak that dated back to Round 3 last year.

The Raiders had never beaten the Broncos since joining the competition in 2023, making Sunday's result one of the most significant wins in the club's history.
