Initially, the Cowboys faced significant challenges, suffering losses to the Manly Sea Eagles (42-12), Cronulla Sharks (36-12), and Brisbane Broncos (26-16).
However, the tide turned in Round 4 against the Canberra Raiders, where they secured a 30-20 victory, marking the beginning of an upswing.
This win set the stage for subsequent narrow victories over the Penrith Panthers (22-18) and South Sydney Rabbitohs (24-16) before a bye week allowed the team some much-needed refreshment.
