Canterbury secured a 14-10 victory over Canberra, marking their second win of the season, despite off-field issues and adverse weather conditions.

    The Canberra Times

Canterbury's week in the headlines has ended on a high, beating Canberra 14-10 in wet and wild conditions at GIO Stadium.

The Bulldogs' bye week was dominated by reports that centre Bronson Xerri was unhappy and could soon seek a release after being dropped for Thursday night's clash.

But Canterbury shook off their off-field woes with Stephen Crichton's two penalty goals proving the difference as the visitors claimed their second consecutive win to start the season, something last achieved in 2012.

With rain lashing down in the nation's capital, the Dogs weathered the Raiders' fast start before the contest transformed into a grind as Canberra struggled to break through Canterbury's typically rigid defence.

The Bulldogs defeated the Raiders, spoiling Ricky Stuart's 300th game, and moved to the NRL's top spot.

    The Australian

The Bulldogs have ruined Ricky Stuart's 300th game in charge of the Raiders to move to the top of the NRL ladder after a classic wet-weather slugfest between two high quality sides at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Thursday night.

Both sides were enormous in defence and controlled the ball well in attack considering the atrocious conditions, before Jacob Preston sealed the win with a try under the posts in the 71st minute.

Canberra scored late via Savelio Tamale to set up a grandstand finish, but the Dogs held on.

The loss won't be the only thing Stuart and Canberra have to worry about though, with Josh Papali'i at the mercy of the match review committee after a first half hit on Sam Hughes that landed the ironman prop in the sin bin.

"(Referee) Adam Gee said forceful and to the head," Greg Alexander said in commentary.

Benji Marshall shuts down Tigers double recruitment play

Benji Marshall denies Wests Tigers links to Scott Drinkwater and Bronson Xerri amid recent club changes and controversies.

    Zero Tackle

Wests Tigers head coach Benji Marshall has moved to emphatically shut down links to Scott Drinkwater and Bronson Xerri.

The North Queensland Cowboys fullback Drinkwater is back in the headlines after originally being linked to the shopping list at the back-end of 2025.

The Cowboys squashed those rumours at the time, but his reported axing from first-grade this weekend - something the club are claiming has more to do with his ribs than form - could see the question marks return.

Bronson Xerri, meanwhile, has been dropped from Canterbury's side for their clash this weekend with the Canberra Raiders, and has reportedly requested a release.
