    The Canberra Raiders seized first place in the NRL after a narrow 22-18 win over Newcastle.

    The Canberra Raiders have snatched first place on the NRL ladder after narrowly disposing of the Newcastle Knights 22-18 in the Hunter.

    Despite sitting in second for the majority of the season, Canterbury's 8-6 loss to Penrith on Thursday night left the door ajar for Ricky Stuart's side to climb their way into pole position.

    The Knights on the other hand have won two of their last three clashes, both thanks to tries on the last play, yet neither displays convinced fans that the club had turned a corner.

    Kalyn Ponga will undergo scans for a foot injury after exiting Newcastle's loss to Canberra.

    Kalyn Ponga will be sent for scans on a foot injury after failing to finish Newcastle's disappointing 22-18 loss to the Canberra Raiders.

    Ponga left Friday night's game after an innocuous tackle midway through the second half, in what could also be a potential blow for Queensland with the State of Origin decider at Accor Stadium less than two weeks away,

    Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien confirmed that the injury was not to the same foot as the one which forced Ponga to miss seven games last season.
