  • Video: Try or Penalty? Controversial Ruling Leaves Callers and Fans Stunned

Try or no try? Gilbert puts the Dolphins back in it! But was it...

    Fox League

Sin bins weren’t the only controversial calls in the [Dolphins and Raiders] match, with a contentious try awarded to Dolphins forward Tom Gilbert when they trailed late in the second half.

After putting the grubber through, Gilbert appeared to put hands on Raider Matthew Timoko in the chase into the in-goal.

“You can’t put hands in there!” Dan Ginnane lamented.

“Normally when hands are involved, it doesn’t end well for the attacker.”

But Ginnane and Shane Flanagan were left shocked moments later when the try was awarded by the bunker.

“Oh it’s confirmed! It is confirmed! Boy oh boy,” Ginnane said.

‘Don’t write me off’: Wayne drops hint on coaching future, reveals frontrunner for Dolphins captaincy

Canberra Raiders backrower Hudson Young was binned defending his line when Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow caught him off-side at marker.

Wayne Bennett surprisingly went into bat for Young who was only able to hold Tabuai-Fidow up over the line because he wasn’t square.

“I thought the sin bin on them was pretty tough as well,” Bennett said.

“The ref didn’t have a lot of problems with the game, the players were playing within the rules pretty well, trying their hearts out and I just thought that was a pretty tough sin-binning.

“It’s a huge price to pay, 10 minutes in the bin. If they’d done two or three in row, well I understand that, but that was just a one-off marker.”

    Fox League

Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett has slammed the sin bin of halfback Sean O’Sullivan, and even criticised a call by referee Todd Smith that went in his side’s favour on Saturday night.

Raiders forward Corey Harawira-Naera put a grubber through in the 75th minute then ran straight into O’Sullivan who held his position in the defensive line.

Smith ruled O’Sullivan hit Corey Harawira-Naera not just late but high, and binned him which allowed Canberra to level the scores.
