The Melbourne Storm have been rocked by the news that powerhouse centre Justin Olam suffered a fractured forearm in Sunday's trial.

The club confirmed the 29-year-old had broken his right arm in the match against the Roosters and was expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

The Raiders have also copped a blow on the injury front with scans confirming rising fullback Xavier Savage broke his jaw in Sunday's trial against the Bulldogs. Canberra said the speedster likely wouldn't be available for selection until round seven.

    The Canberra Times

The Canberra Raiders have been dealt a massive pre-season blow with star fullback Xavier Savage set to spend eight weeks on the sideline with a broken jaw.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart will have just his one remaining pre-season trial to settle on who will wear the No.1 jersey against the North Queensland Cowboys in round one.

Canberra co-captain Jarrod Croker felt Jordan Rapana would be the obvious short-term replacement, while Stuart also had Albert Hopoate and Harley Smith-Shields as other options.

  • Savage blow as Raiders fullback to miss six rounds with fractured jaw

    Xavier Savage

    Canberra Weekly

Canberra have suffered a monumental injury blow with fullback Xavier Savage to miss the first six rounds of the NRL season with a fractured jaw.

Savage was one of two frontline players to suffer injuries in the weekend’s trial matches, with Melbourne centre Justin Olam also requiring surgery on a fractured forearm.

Most other clubs got through the first round of pre-season games unscathed, with more big-name players set to return this week.

The Raiders, however, have been left to feel the pain of Savage’s injury in Sunday’s 34-18 loss to Canterbury.
