The Raiders NRLW has effectively only existed for seven months, yet in their first season, they have exceeded the expectations of most observers.

Canberra had five wins from nine games, including a memorable 24-14 victory over the high-flying Roosters in July, to finish just outside the top four in their debut season.

Much of the success can be attributed to the recruitment of key players, a coach with experience coaching in the NRLW, and the culture created within the Raiders organisation.

Coach Darrin Borthwick believes it has made the Raiders a destination club where players are attracted to come and play.

Following Brad Fittler's announcement that he was stepping down as NSW State of Origin coach, Craig Bellamy and Ricky Stuart have emerged as the leading contenders to replace him.

Fittler had made his case to extend his contract, but ultimately withdrew himself from contention after the board offered only a one-year extension and a significant pay cut.

Matty Johns, a former Newcastle Knights player, believes that the NSW coach should not be required to be independent of an NRL team.

He argues that a full-time NRL coach like Bellamy or Stuart would be well-suited for the position given the current circumstances.

Glenn Lazarus knows how hard a three-peat is better than most.

He won back-to-back premierships with both the Canberra Raiders and the Brisbane Broncos.

And the man known affectionately as "The Brick With Eyes" was part of the last team to have the chance to turn three consecutive grand finals into a hat-trick of premierships - the 1991 Raiders.
