Brisbane have one hand on the NRL minor premiership after seeing off a stubborn Canberra outfit 29-18 in a high-octane clash in the nation's capital.

Winger Selwyn Cobbo's hat-trick of tries and another classy display from superstar fullback Reece Walsh saw the Broncos break their opponent's fight late in the match at GIO Stadium.

The win moves the Broncos to the top of the ladder and they can seal first place after the regular season with a victory over Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.

The match was marked by a heartfelt farewell from Raiders fans, who paid tribute to Jarrod Croker and Jack Wighton in their last regular season home game for the club.

However, the Raiders' early mistakes proved costly as the Broncos were granted multiple opportunities near their try line.

Rugby league icon Phil Gould has labelled Jordan Rapana a "marked man" after the fullback was sin binned for an alleged trip against the Broncos.

After Selwyn Cobbo managed to evade Rapana and score, the Bunker picked up the incident just before Kotoni Staggs' goal-kick attempt. 

The sin bin came with the Broncos leading 20-18 at the 63rd minute and proved pivotal with Brisbane putting on another nine points.
