The Raiders very nearly upset one of the NRL's premiership favourites in a thrilling end-to-end NRL encounter, but just couldn't quite get it done in Jack Wighton and Jarrod Croker's last regular season home game.

It was nearly the perfect Bruce send-off for retiring centre Croker, and Redfern-bound Wighton in front of 19,400 fans.

Locked at 16-16 after the first 40 minutes the Raiders got a sniff of an upset, but a second-half head knock to Josh Papali'i and a Jordan Rapana sin bin allowed Brisbane to race away to a 29-18 victory.

  • Terrible ref blunder gifts Broncos win against Raiders

In a game that had significant implications for both teams' finals hopes, a terrible refereeing blunder gifted the Brisbane Broncos a victory over the Canberra Raiders. The NRL Bunker's intervention to send Jordan Rapana to the sin bin for tripping was a decision that would ultimately change the course of the game and leave the Raiders reeling from an unjust call.

With the Raiders leading 18-16, the NRL Bunker reviewed a Broncos try and decided to intervene, sending Jordan Rapana to the sin bin for an alleged trip. However, upon closer examination of the replays, it became evident that Rapana was merely attempting to make a legitimate tackle, and there was no trip involved at all. This erroneous decision had a profound impact on the game's momentum and ultimately influenced the final outcome.

The sin binning of Rapana proved to be a turning point in the match. With the Broncos gaining an extra player advantage, they capitalized on the situation and went on to score crucial points, ultimately securing a 29-18 victory.

The consequences of this terrible refereeing blunder were far-reaching for the Canberra Raiders. Not only did they lose a game they were leading, but their chances of making it to the finals were also significantly jeopardized. The loss against the Broncos meant that the Raiders now face a must-win clash against the Cronulla Sharks in their final regular-season game, with a place in the finals potentially hanging in the balance.

This incident highlights the crucial role that accurate refereeing plays in the integrity of the game. Referees and officials hold the responsibility of making fair and unbiased decisions that can significantly impact the outcome of matches. In this case, the incorrect call had a profound effect on the Raiders' chances of securing a finals spot, leaving fans and players frustrated and questioning the reliability of the officiating system.

The Raiders now face a crucial match against the Cronulla Sharks next week on Sunday in the final match of the regular season.
