    Injured Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is set to make a return to rugby league this weekend following a horrific knee injury he suffered last season.

    The 25-year-old has been sidelined since July 17, 2022 when he fractured his patella while attempting to tackle Raiders player Jack Wighton.

    Parramatta have all but given up on signing a winger before Monday's transfer deadline after a late bid for Canberra's Harley Smith-Shields failed.

    The Eels could move Bailey Simonsson to the wing or give Arthur Miller-Stephen his NRL debut with Isaac Lumelume, who was named to start against St George Illawarra on Sunday, very unlikely to play.

    The western Sydney club has had a bad run with wingers. Maika Sivo (suspension), Lumelume, Haze Dunster and Zac Cini (injuries), and Waqa Blake (form) have all missed portions of the season.

    It's the loan deal that almost bolstered the Canberra Raiders' halves stocks for 2024.

    But Raiders centre Harley Smith-Shields will see out the NRL season looking to force his way back into the Green Machine - rather than spending the final five rounds with the Parramatta Eels.

    The Eels were looking to bolster their outside backs and saw Smith-Shields as an option to do exactly that, joining his former Raiders teammate Bailey Simonsson at the Sydney club.
