Canberra have marked their first NRLW home game with an upset win, taking down competition heavyweights the Sydney Roosters 24-14.

Defying their tag as rank outsiders, the league newcomers turned in a brilliant opening 50 minutes in the second-round clash before digging deep to cling on for their maiden win in front of a strong crowd at GIO Stadium.

Back-to-back tries for former international rugby representatives - Australia's Grace Kemp and New Zealander Cheyelle Robins-Reti - saw the Raiders skip out to a 12-0 advantage early in the second half.

The in-form Knights will be desperate to record another huge victory and close their gap on the top eight against the Raiders on Saturday afternoon.

Adam O'Brien's side bested the Storm in a huge upset victory in Round 21, only a week after putting 34 points on the Tigers.

Led by superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga, Newcastle have emerged as a finals contender in the tight top-eight race to close out this season.

In 1982, when the Raiders men's team played their first home game at Seiffert Oval in the NSWRL, 6769 people were in attendance.

It heralded the culmination of years of hard work to gain entry into the predominantly Sydney-based competition.

Today (29 July), the Raiders NRLW side is hoping to attract a bigger crowd than the one that turned out at Seiffert in 1982. They will be taking on the Roosters in a double header with the Raiders NRL team facing the Newcastle Knights.

The game also coincides with the Women in League round.
