Andrew Barr advocates for a multi-purpose stadium by the lake but warns that accommodating too many sports could dilute user experiences.
Andrew Barr says plans for a new stadium by the lake should factor in the ability to host cricket and AFL - but the Chief Minister's call has been met with a warning that "if a stadium tries to be all things to everybody, then the experience is going to be diluted".
The prospect of adding cricket and AFL would guarantee more content at a new multi-purpose venue - but a larger playing surface would raise fresh questions over the viability of the site near Lake Burley Griffin.
A Canberra Airport Group-led push to build a venue by the lake has revived hopes of a stadium in the city, but factoring in a larger playing surface could see plans eat into Regatta Point and increase costs.
Barr told ABC Radio a new stadium would need to hold 30,000 seats, before adding: "I think they should also consider its configuration to allow it to host cricket and AFL. That would give another 12 events a year at least."
