Savage sparks ragged Raiders despite controversial call

Interim coach Dean Young admits being dumbfounded after several game-defining calls went against St George Illawarra in their 24-16 loss to Canberra.
Languishing in 16th place with their finals hopes on life support, the Raiders knew only a win on Sunday at a bleak GIO Stadium could help save their disappointing minor premiership defence.
They couldn't have made a poorer start as the Dragons dominated the opening 40 minutes, although they struggled to seriously punish the home team and took a 10-6 lead into the break.

The Canberra Raiders claimed a crucial win against the St George Illawarra Dragons in a game that featured a handful of controversial moments.
Xavier Savage's double in the 24-16 win was praised by teammate Hudson Young.
"We let ourselves down throughout the year letting too my soft tries in so we talked about showing up for each other," Young said post-game.
"[Savage] is a freaky player and you get that off the back of great defence. Massive for X, being in the right place at the right time.
"The feeling at the club has been really strong and I'd like to thank our fans and members for keeping on turning up for us."
