Bears switch attention from Paulo to dumped Raider

Perth is likely landing spot for prop Corey Horsburgh as Canberra pursues Brisbane's Jaiyden Hunt to strengthen their forward pack.

    The Sydney Morning Herald

Perth has emerged as the likely destination for out-of-favour Canberra prop Corey Horsburgh as the Raiders eye a Brisbane forward to bolster their pack.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart on Tuesday dropped Horsburgh for Saturday's clash against Cronulla after a "brain explosion" proved costly in Sunday's loss to Newcastle. The Bears had been in negotiations with Parramatta prop Junior Paulo about a two-year deal, but weren't prepared to meet an asking price above $900,000 a season.

They have now turned their attention to Horsburgh, with Bears coach Mal Meninga meeting the Maroons enforcer on Tuesday. The Raiders, meanwhile, are keen on Broncos forward Jaiyden Hunt. The Broncos want to keep Hunt, but Canberra's interest is an indication they don't expect to have Horsburgh on their books next year, sources not authorised to comment, said.

Brisbane were also in negotiations with Horsburgh, but are unlikely to have the salary cap space required to make a serious play.

Corey Horsburgh was dropped from Canberra's lineup after a costly incident in a loss to Newcastle, raising uncertainties about his future with the team.

    The Canberra Times

Corey Horsburgh's future at Canberra appears increasingly bleak after being axed following his "brain explosion" in the Raiders' season-ending loss to Newcastle.

On a day of big-name returnees with James Tedesco, Dylan Edwards and Bradman Best all chances to come back from injury, Horsburgh was the most notable absentee from team lists.

The Raiders prop is signed with Canberra until the end of next season, but has been linked with a move to the Broncos for 2027.

That came before Horsburgh drew the ire of Raiders coach Ricky Stuart on Sunday, when he was sin-binned for slapping Dane Gagai late in the 30-24 loss to the Knights.

  • Canberra Raiders fear PNG Chiefs will lure star Hudson Young with tax-free deal should he hit the open market

Canberra Raiders fear PNG Chiefs will lure star Hudson Young with tax-free deal should he hit the open market

The Raiders fear PNG Chiefs' offers may lure star forward Hudson Young, leading to contract extension talks with his manager.

    The Australian

The Canberra Raiders fear the PNG Chiefs' tax-free offers will prompt star forward Hudson Young to dramatically quit the club.

Raiders' officials will meet with Young's manager, Sam Ayoub, about a contract extension amid concerns he will become the Chiefs' prime signing target come November 1.

Young is contracted to the Raiders until the end of next season, meaning PNG are unable to approach or discuss Young. However, their admiration for the NSW Origin and Kangaroos edge forward is undeniable.

Canberra and Ayoub are due to meet in the next fortnight.

Ayoub hasn't asked Canberra whether his client could start early contract discussions with PNG about Young, nor has he approached the NRL's newest franchise.
