    Corey Horsburgh

An irate Ricky Stuart has blasted Corey Horsburgh's costly sin bin as a "fu***** brain explosion", blaming it for the loss to Newcastle.

Down by four points with less than ten minutes to go in the contest, the Canberra Raiders were given a golden opportunity to level the scores after referee Ashley Klein awarded a penalty against the Knights.

However, within a matter of seconds, the call was overturned after the Bunker reviewed the footage and it was deemed that Horsburgh struck Dane Gagai.

The decision not only sent the former Queensland Maroons representative to the sin bin - leaving the Raiders one man short - but it ultimately cost the club any hopes of reaching this year's finals series.

Dominic Young double all-but ends Canberra Raiders’ top eight hopes in controversial game

Canberra's hopes faded after a controversial penalty reversal, leading to Newcastle's 30-24 victory in a tense match.

    The Australian

Canberra's pursuit of a top-eight spot is all but done and dusted but not before a controversial moment robbed them of any last ditch chance to claim victory against Newcastle, in a contest that toed and froed from the outset on a very cold and wet afternoon in the nation's capital.

Trailing 26-24, and with field position in defence, Ashley Klein awarded a penalty against Newcastle's Dane Gagai for pushing Corey Horsburgh in a scuffle after a tackle was made, giving Canberra the ball with six and a half minutes to go.

After a protest from Newcastle captain Kalyn Ponga, the referee overturned the decision, with assistance from the Bunker, and the penalty was flipped with the Canberra backrower put on report for striking and sent to the sin-bin for the remainder of the match

Newcastle prevailed 30-24 to give Tyson Frizell the win he deserved in his milestone 300th match.

There was some confusion as to whether the discretion was for a high tackle or the slap by Horsburgh after he was pushed, but it appeared via the Fox League commentary it was for the slap.

The Canberra Raiders' finals hopes ended with a 30-24 loss to Newcastle, highlighting a controversial sin bin incident involving Corey Horsburgh.

    Zero Tackle

The Canberra Raiders' finals hopes are officially over after they suffered a 30-24 defeat to the Newcastle Knights in their second final home game of the season.

The Raiders fought back from an early 8-0 deficit to level the scores at 18-all heading into half-time, but were unable to complete the comeback as the Knights held on for a six-point victory.

However, the controversial moment of the night came inside the final ten minutes when Raiders prop Corey Horsburgh was sent to the sin bin for striking Newcastle centre Dane Gagai.

Gagai pushed the Raiders forward to play the ball, with Horsburgh responding by slapping the Knights centre in the face.
