The Canberra Raiders' finals hopes ended with a 30-24 loss to Newcastle, highlighting a controversial sin bin incident involving Corey Horsburgh.

The Canberra Raiders' finals hopes are officially over after they suffered a 30-24 defeat to the Newcastle Knights in their second final home game of the season.

The Raiders fought back from an early 8-0 deficit to level the scores at 18-all heading into half-time, but were unable to complete the comeback as the Knights held on for a six-point victory.

However, the controversial moment of the night came inside the final ten minutes when Raiders prop Corey Horsburgh was sent to the sin bin for striking Newcastle centre Dane Gagai.

Gagai pushed the Raiders forward to play the ball, with Horsburgh responding by slapping the Knights centre in the face.

Knights shrug off loss of two more stars to sink Raiders’ finals hopes

Newcastle defeated Canberra 30-24 despite injuries, solidifying their top-eight position while potentially adding to their injury woes.

    The Sydney Morning Herald

Newcastle have overcome the loss of key personnel to virtually end Canberra's finals hopes by grinding out a see-sawing 30-24 victory at GIO Stadium.

The Knights' injury list ballooned before Sunday's damp clash with centre Bradman Best and hooker Phoenix Crossland (both calf) ruled out, joining halfback Dylan Brown and second-rower Dylan Lucas on the sidelines.

But Newcastle (13-8), buoyed by celebrating Tyson Frizell's 300th game, produced a fearless performance to solidify their position inside the top eight.

The Knights may have more players to add to their casualty ward though, as Frizell hobbled off the field in the second half.

Corey Horsburgh was sin-binned for a high hit on Dane Gagai during Canberra's loss to Newcastle.

    Wide World of Sports

Corey Horsburgh was left in disbelief after he was sent to the sin bin for his hostile response to hitting an opponent high late in Canberra's 30-24 loss to the Knights.

Horsburgh was looking to punch his team back in front on the scoreboard with minutes left in the game but made an error, collecting Dane Gagai high on the ground.

Newcastle was quick to note that Gagai, who had dived out to collect a loose ball, was struck high, but referee Ashley Klein was content leaving the play to go on as the contact was "incidental".

Gagai tugged at the neck of Horsburgh's jersey as he got back to his feet and refused to play the ball, resulting in Canberra being awarded a penalty.
