Canberra defeated Melbourne 32-6 in a pre-season match, with Daine Laurie impressing in his debut after a stint at Penrith.

Daine Laurie has shown he can be a valuable signing for Canberra, leading them to a 32-6 pre-season win over Melbourne in his first hit-out for the club.

Playing in the halves after moving down from the Panthers, Laurie had varying roles in the first four tries for the Raiders in Queanbeyan, before leaving the field in the second half.

Wests Tigers' player of the year in 2021, the 26-year-old struggled for game time when he returned to his former club Penrith in 2024.

But after going unsigned and ending up in Canberra on a three-year deal, Laurie was one of the best for last year's minor premiers on Friday night.

  • Massive Ricky headache brewing thanks to red-hot Raiders backs

    David Polkinghorne

Ricky's pre-season trial revealed fierce competition for Canberra Raiders' centre spots, highlighted by strong performances from players like Michael Asomua and Mark Tuialii.

    The Canberra Times

Ricky wanted an outside backs battle. And he's got one.

Canberra Raiders centre spots were especially up for grabs this pre-season with the likes of Savelio Tamale and Simi Sasagi throwing their hats in the ring.

If there was anything to take out of the Green Machine's opening pre-season trial - which they won 32-6 over the Melbourne Storm at Seiffert Oval on Friday night - it's that competition amongst the outside backs is red hot.

Xavier Savage (best man duties) and Matt Timoko (knee) were the only "OB's" unavailable to face the Storm.

Evolution of the coach: How rugby league coaching has changed

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy extends contract until 2028, embracing the decision despite retirement talks, and looks forward to the season opener against Canberra Raiders.

    Zero Tackle

Last week, the Melbourne Storm confirmed that coach Craig Bellamy would be extending his tenure at the club until 2028.

With the talks of retirement looming every year, the multi-premiership-winning coach explained his decision to extend his coaching contract at a press conference yesterday.

"I wouldn't say it was an easy decision, but it's the decision we have come to and one I am going to embrace. I am really looking forward to Friday night and the rest of the season."

The Storm will play their first trial game tonight against the Canberra Raiders, both teams largely playing their reserve grade sides.
