Canberra Raiders star Simi Sasagi opens up on engagement, family, chasing NRL dream

Canberra's Simi Sasagi hid an engagement ring in his shoe collection, anxious about his girlfriend's cleaning habits before proposing.

    The Australian

For months, Canberra cult hero Simi Sasagi was terrified his girlfriend Kate would have an impulsive urge to spring clean their home.

Hiding in a shoebox in the back of his closet was a secret Sasagi had been keeping since January.

"I knew she wouldn't look - well, I was hoping she wouldn't - in any of the shoe boxes," Sasagi laughed.

"I had bought her engagement ring in January, I have a bit of a shoe collection, so I just hid it in the sole of a pair of shoes."

Canberra aims for three consecutive wins over Penrith, a feat unmatched since 2020, but the Panthers have strategies to prevent this.

    The Canberra Times

Canberra could become the first team to score three consecutive wins over Penrith since their NRL dynasty began, but the Panthers have a simple plan to halt history.

Teams have come close to jagging back-to-back-to-back wins over Ivan Cleary's men since they surged to heavyweight status during the 2020 season.

Parramatta, North Queensland and Melbourne have each won two in a row on two separate occasions, with the Cowboys coming the closest to snaring three-straight wins when they drew with Penrith last year.

But the Raiders could enter rarefied air at home on Sunday as Hudson Young (suspension) and Ethan Strange (ankle injury) return to bolster Ricky Stuart's side.
