If journalists covering the October 2023 hearing of Jack Wighton and Latrell Mitchell had not been so focused on the NRL stars, there may have been more outcry about a brief but crucial court exchange.

News media reports understandably concentrated on dramatic footage of the violent arrests, a territory sergeant admitting to giving false evidence, and prosecutors dropping criminal charges as a result.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs teammates were ultimately vindicated by a piece of CCTV footage which proved Mr Wighton never acted aggressively inside a Canberra nightclub on his 30^th birthday.

The NRL view the Tom Starling no-try decision as a 50-50 call that could've gone either way.

And footage has emerged of Canterbury hooker Reed Mahoney suggesting the Max King go-ahead try should've been a penalty to the Canberra Raiders about 25 metres out from the Bulldogs' line.

The NRL have taken a different approach to refereeing decisions this season, scrapping football boss Graham Annesley's weekly press conferences and declining to comment on anything that isn't a clear-cut mistake.
