  • What we learned from the Raiders two pre-season challenge games

    Pre-season games may not accurately predict regular season success given limited playing time for key players.

    It's hard to read too much into pre-season games with key players either rested or given limited time on the field.

    You only have to look at the fate of the two previous NRL pre-season champions. The Broncos won the 2024 pre-season challenge only to finish 12th in the premiership while the 2023 pre-season champions, Manly, also finished 12th in the regular season.

    The Raiders accounted for a Panthers outfit minus their premiership players, 22-16, in their opening pre-season game before going down to the Sharks 40-10.

    Canberra Raiders head coach Ricky Stuart is still at a loss to describe his team's inability to win a penalty count, despite the fact they snuck over the line in a final-minute thriller against the Cronulla Sharks on Thursday evening.Only a late, last ditch and ad-lib try could get the Raiders over the line against the Sharks in a game where they were trounced in the penalty count."I think the penalty count was 7-2, ok fine if we're giving penalties away that's great but you can't tell me other teams don't give away penalties as well," Stuart said during his post-match press conference.
