    Cowboys hold off Raiders to secure first win of 2025

    Cowboys secure first win of 2025, defeating Raiders 30-20 in nail-biting match in Townsville.

    The Cowboys have their first win of 2025 after desperately holding out the Canberra Raiders in a nailbiting 30-20 triumph in front of 18,897 fans in Townsville.

    It looked like Canberra was about to hit the lead late when Raiders rocket Xavier Savage broke the line with Owen Pattie in support, but instead the winger elected to go himself and let the try go begging.

    Instead, it was the Cowboys' captain courageous Tom Dearden who put the team on his shoulders with the match-sealing try in the late stages.

    The 23-year-old was targeted with towering Daly Cherry-Evans' bombs in Round 3 before North Queensland halfback leapt over him to score in Townsville.

    Weekes also recorded a pair of errors in his side's defeat, but ran for 125 metres as well as breaking three tackles and the defensive line once.

    Raiders prop Josh Papalii could be facing a sanction from the NRL after he was put on report twice in his side's 30-20 loss to the Cowboys.

    The big man's incidents came against Sam McIntyre on both occasions and related to high shots.

    Papalii's first incident was in the 26th minute with his forearm connecting with McIntyre's head after he'd only just came on the field.
