  • 'Ridiculous': Andrew Johns says Raiders cruelled in loss to Knights

    Newcastle Knights

Contentious calls angered league greats as Raiders lost 32-12 to Knights, with a denied try and player suspension affecting the match.

    Wide World of Sports

A series of contentious calls left league greats angered after the Raiders were denied a try and reduced to 12 men in a heated showing against the Knights on Sunday.

Newcastle delivered a promising performance in front of their home crowd to defeat the 2025 minor premiers 32-12, but they did not do so without controversy.

The hosts entered the second half with a four-point advantage and a debutant on the field, with star centre Bradman Best ruled out of the game with a groin injury.

"It won't be a penalty try, but it is a professional foul," Andrew Johns said on Nine.

  • Paul Gallen, Billy Slater at odds as Raiders star Kaeo Weekes escapes sin bin

    Melbourne Storm

Paul Gallen was surprised Greg Marzhew wasn't sin-binned for dangerous contact on Raiders' Kaeo Weekes during the game.

    Wide World of Sports

Paul Gallen was left stunned that Knights gun Greg Marzhew did not end up in the sin bin against the Raiders after he was penalised for dangerous contact on Raiders star Kaeo Weekes on Sunday.

A bomb was put up to test Weekes midway through the second half, but the Canberra fullback was not fazed by the play and collected the ball in the air.

It was not a smooth landing after taking the catch for his team, though, with Marzhew running in and collecting his legs while he was still in flight.

"He is looking at the ball the whole time. It is a penalty," Slater said on Nine.

    St George-Illawarra Dragons

The Roosters last played a perfect game without penalties 30 years ago, impacting rugby league rules.

    Wide World of Sports

You have to go back 30 years to the last time the Roosters had a 'perfect' game, failing to give away a penalty.

And the game in which they did it ended up changing the rules of rugby league.

The year was 1996 and the Roosters were up against the Broncos at the old Sydney Football Stadium.

The loss on Thursday night was the final nail in Anthony Seibold's coffin and the luckless coach will lament that referee Wyatt Raymond didn't give the home side a single penalty in 80 minutes.
