Raiders confirm new injury blow for captain

Canberra Raiders' Whitehead re-injured calf, out for game against Cronulla Sharks in potential final year.

    Zero Tackle

The Canberra Raiders have confirmed Elliott Whitehead has re-injured his calf after being ruled out of Sunday's game against the Cronulla Sharks.

The Englishman, likely in his final year as an NRL player before hanging up the boots at the end of what has become a nine-year stint at the Raiders which will, fitness pending, tick over 200 games before the season is finished, has only played a single game so far this year.

The absence from the green machine - who have had a successful start to the year - came after he injured his calf prior to Round 1.

He's been sidelined since he suffered a terrifying seizure during the Raiders-South Sydney game at Homebush in May last year - more than 10 months ago - when he was taken to hospital in an ambulance after collapsing on the field during play.

The 24-year-old signed a new deal last year to remain with the Gold Coast, but has a player option in his favour for the next two years.

Fifita was an admirer of former coach Justin Holbrook, who was axed last season by the Titans and replaced by Des Hasler this year, which has seen the side produce two awful displays in losses against the Dragons and Bulldogs.
