The Canberra Raiders face a fight to retain star five-eighth Jack Wighton amid confirmation the 30-year-old is going to the open market for the first time since joining the club.

Wighton, who is off-contract at the end of this season, has an option in his favour for 2024 and it was widely expected he would extend his stay in the nation’s capital.

But The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday afternoon that Wighton, who had until round 10 to trigger that automatic extension, will instead test his worth.

The Raiders are ready to fight to keep their hugely influential playmaker.

“Jack’s quite within his rights to test the market,’’ Don Furner told News Corp.

“He’s been incredibly loyal to us for 14 seasons, he’s never once gone out and tested the market.

“He has our full support. He knows that we’re going to do everything we can to keep him and extend him.

“But being possibly his last contract, he has to do what is right for his young family and we fully understand and appreciate that.’’

‘Everything to keep him’: Raiders ready to fight as Wighton flips player market

    The Sydney Morning Herald

Canberra remain confident Jack Wighton will finish his career as a one-club player despite the NSW Origin and Kangaroos star preparing to test his market value for the first time in 14 years.

Wighton has potentially turned the NRL player market on its head by informing Raiders officials he will explore his options elsewhere beyond the 2023 season.

A mainstay of Ricky Stuart’s side as both Canberra’s highest-paid and most influential player, most in rugby league had assumed he would take up the 2024 option in his contract, which is believed to be worth around $900,000 a season.
