Two referees were allegedly attacked by a father and son pair from Western Sydney during a Rugby 7s competition in Canberra on the weekend, including one who was hit from behind in a 'coward' punch.

The incident took place during the junior Rugby 7s tournament held at the Southwell Park playing fields in Lyneham around 3 pm on Sunday (21 September), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

It is alleged an 18-year-old man and his 42-year-old father, both from Fairfield in NSW, entered the playing fields before the son assaulted one referee.

When a second referee tried to help the first, the father allegedly 'coward' punched the second from behind.

Brad Fittler has highlighted the two minutes of action that swung Saturday night's semi final in the favour of Cronulla and effectively ended Canberra's season.

It was a bitter exit for the minor premiers at GIO Stadium, losing back-to-back games and going out in straight sets from the finals series with a 32-12 defeat at home.

The game remained in the balance until the last 10 minutes but according to Fittler, there was one obvious time period where the Raiders let it slip away.

After a disappointing season, the Raiders seek a new halfback after Fogarty's departure.

    LeagueNews.co

After a disappointing end to their season, falling short of a preliminary finals place despite finishing first in 2025, the Canberra Raiders are keen to apply the lessons they've learned moving into 2026.

As they aim to maintain their impressive regular-season performance next year, they face a significant challenge: their star halfback, Jamal Fogarty, is departing to join the Manly Sea Eagles.

This departure leaves the key No. 7 position open, and while young talent Ethan Sanders has been seen as a likely candidate to step in for Fogarty, latest reports suggest that the Raiders are considering an external addition for their halfback role.
