Dragons dropped trio face fresh questions as Talagi shines after Penrith axing

NSW Cup finals race heats up as Blaize Talagi excels, leading Panthers to victory despite defensive concerns.

The race to the finals is well and truly on in the second-tier. With the QLD Cup taking a week off to recover from the carnage of Country Week, our focus this week is exclusively on the NSW Cup.

There were plenty of matches with finals implications while some NRL talent were making their case for recalls as rookies pushed their claims for late-season debuts.

All the talk this week was around Penrith pivot Blaize Talagi and his dropping from the NRL squad for their clash against Canberra. Having been left out of the squad altogether for the Panthers' trip to Mudgee, the Samoan international knew he'd have to make a statement at Parker Street Reserve against the Raiders.

The 21-year-old shone for the Panthers, claiming man-of-the-match honours in their 28-16 victory on Saturday afternoon. He started the match in fine style, crossing for the first try after backing up in support following a linebreak. Despite some concerns over his defence, the five-eight responded with a sound defensive performance, but did concede a try in the second half after he was caught out of position.

Bulldogs fans unhappy after another player reportedly quits the club to sign with Canberra

Lipoi Hopoi is leaving Canterbury Bulldogs to join Canberra Raiders for the 2027 season.

    Yahoo! Sport

The Canterbury Bulldogs appear to have lost another talented young gun with forward Lipoi Hopoi reportedly signing with Canberra for 2027. The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Hopoi will link up with Ricky Stuart's side next season after his current deal with the Bulldogs expires.

The 24-year-old has played 17 NRL games since debuting in 2024, including seven games this season. He's been starved up playing time at the Bulldogs and might get more opportunities in Canberra.

The Raiders could be looking to bolster their forward pack with Josh Papali'i leaving the club in 2027 and speculation as to where Corey Horsburgh's future lies. Horsburgh is contracted until the end of 2027 but the Raiders are reportedly happy for him to depart one year early. The Broncos are said to be keen on the former State of Origin forward after Payne Haas signed with Souths and Corey Jensen was forced to...

  • Raiders centre set to exit for rival NRL club

Stuart says Raiders were “dumb” in loss to Dragons

Sebastian Kris may leave Canberra Raiders for New Zealand Warriors after this season, becoming a free agent in November.

    Zero Tackle

Canberra Raiders centre Sebastian Kris is closing in on changing clubs at the end of this season, with the New Zealand Warriors understood to be hunting his signature.
As it stands, Kris is due to be off-contract at the end of the 2027 NRL season and would be free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1.

News Corp however, are reporting the outside back, who can play on the wing or at centre, will be free to leave at the end of this season if he can find a deal elsewhere.

The Warriors, who have already signed Will Warbrick for next year to join Alofiana Khan-Pereira and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in contention for spots on the wing, and have Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Adam Pompey and Ali Leiataua as potential centres to be joined by utility outside back Grant Anderson, could add Kris to an already crowded race for minutes.

The Auckland-based outfit are set to lose Rocco Berry at the end of this season to the Melbourne Storm, but that will hardly eliminate the pressure on minutes given he hasn't played at all in the top-grade this season as he has worked back through injury problems.
