Broncos coach Michael Maguire has slammed talk of a rift with Ezra Mam and declared the champion pivot is staying at Brisbane amid speculation of a shock move to South Sydney.
Maguire insists Mam is his long-term option at five-eighth as he challenged his embattled Broncos troops to avoid the wooden spoon - starting in Friday night's clash against the Raiders.
The besieged Broncos coach also launched a passionate defence of South Sydney-bound prop Payne Haas after NRL legend Cameron Smith questioned his defensive commitment in last week's loss to the Warriors.
It's been a campaign to forget for Mam. The premiership-winning playmaker has missed the most tackles in the league this season with a whopping 87, including seven in last Saturday's heavy 40-6 loss to the Warriors.
Mam has already been dropped once this season by Maguire - after Brisbane's loss to the Dragons in round 13 - and he goes into the Canberra clash under enormous pressure to muscle up to the Green Machine.

The Canberra Raiders have offered Hudson Young a record $3.3 million, pressuring him against interest from the PNG Chiefs.

And it would be the richest deal in the Green Machine's history.
The Raiders were doing their best to put the pressure back on NRL expansion club PNG Chiefs, who have their sights set on landing Young.
Canberra has offered Young a three-year deal worth a massive $3.3 million, dwarfing the $1 million-a-year deal they offered Jack Wighton.

Josh Papalii couldn't find Canberra on the map when the Raiders first tried to sign him.
Now, ahead of his 341st game - and his final match in Canberra - on Friday night, he leaves the club as its most-capped player and one of its greatest of all time.
Coach Ricky Stuart dubbed him the most passionate Raider ever - a claim few could contest.
"His passion for the Canberra Raiders is as great as I've seen in any individual I've coached or played with," Stuart said.
