NRL concedes Raiders dudded by the 'only option' that was wrong

Annesley defends NRL decision against Raiders, admits mistake, supports ruling on Fogarty tackle. Raiders struggle.

    The Canberra Times

NRL head of football Graham Annesley has defended the decision that robbed the Canberra Raiders of a crucial try, admitting it was wrong but declaring the referee had no option but to stop play.

In what will be a frustrating postscript to a result that put the Raiders' finals bid on life support, Annesley also backed the ruling that Jamal Fogarty wasn't put in a dangerous position in a second-half tackle.

It would be unfair to lump all of the Raiders' problems on refereeing decisions after they slumped to a loss to Manly, conceding 40 points or more at home for the third time this season.

Canberra Raiders suffered shocking 20-minute defeat with controversial calls, must win remaining games for finals.

    The Canberra Times

It was a horror 20 minutes in the second half that cost the Canberra Raiders - conceding six tries as Manly ran all over them.

But Raiders coach Ricky Stuart felt the NRL bunker was to blame for a couple of controversial calls that went against them in the 46-24 loss at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.

The loss means the Raiders might need to win all four of their remaining games - against North Queensland, Penrith, the Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra - to play finals.
