    The Canberra Raiders are fighting to avoid their lowest finish in a decade after sinking to a 41-year first with their finals hopes fading.

    The Raiders have conceded 40 points on five occasions in the same season for the first time since 1983 after a nightmare eight-day stretch left their premiership ambitions on life support.

    Only three times in club history have the Raiders conceded 40 points five times in the same season - and you have to wind back to the club's infancy to find the figures in an era of Peter Sterling's star-studded Parramatta Eels, the Mortimer brothers at Belmore, Steve "Blocker" Roach's Balmain and Darryl Brohman...

    Valentine Holmes has etched himself into North Queensland record books days after announcing his exit from the club, scoring a hat-trick in their 42-4 win over a woeful Canberra.

    Holmes finished with a club-record 26 points of his own in Townsville on Saturday night to cap a week in which his place in the side was questioned and he signed with St George Illawarra for next year.

    Jake Clifford also impressed after being preferred at halfback for the axed Chad Townsend, scoring one try and setting up two others in the Cowboys' biggest win of 2024.

    Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has slammed his side's massive
    38-point loss to the Cowboys
    as a "boys' performance" that revealed his side as being "precious."

    Speaking at his post-game press conference, Stuart was furious at the level his side performed at in Townsville, stating "that's nowhere near what we've got."

    "That was a boys' performance tonight. In every little contest we got smashed," he added.
